Fishing Report August 2nd 2026

Smallmouth bass caught fly fishing on the muskegon river in newaygo michigan.

Stacey with and awesome smallmouth that slammed a popper the other morning!

Smallmouth fishing on the Muskegon has been steady. The river is at a normal summer time level (1070cfs) . Fishing timber and rocky areas have proven their worth the past couple weeks. Fishing topwater flies and baits in blue, yellow and white in the morning hours have gotten plenty of attention. Switching over to subsurface presentations in the afternoons, weather your stripping streamers or casting hardware, have had their fun. Streamers and hardware in white, olive and black have all had their moments.

I still have a couple of August and early September dates available for smallmouth. Also, things are filling in fast for our fall salmon and steelhead season. If you’re interested in tugging on kings or trying to wrangle in a steelhead, give Tailwater Charters call! We would be happy to get you on the schedule!

Hope everyone has a great and fishy week! See you on the river! - Capt. Ross
